Julien Scheffer is a fine art photographer working primarily with 35mm and medium format film.
Julien grew up in France and studied at the University of Tasmania where he completed a PhD in Visual Art in 2018. His art practice revolves around representing ordinary things in the world around him – objects on the street, parts of his body, screens, everyday items, familiar places, personal feelings – with the aim of uncovering new ways to understand those.
His photographs often feature alterations, or rely on a particular way of looking, to disrupt the way their subject matter is perceived and open up ways for the viewer to reconsider what seems familiar at first. Julien’s work is not set in a particular visual aesthetic but is often poetic, absurd or humourous in tone. The artist uses those qualities to surprise or puzzle the viewer and encourage people to think about the meaning of images.
